The painting as an object

(2022)

What does it mean to objectify the painting? A traditionally wall-based and male-dominated practice, paintings have been subjected to the mere act of contemplation by the observer for centuries. This installation begins to question the power dynamics that are in play between the artwork and the viewer as well as the elitism that painting is stereotyped to in the arts sphere. My interests surrounding objectification theory extends into discourse surrounding women’s position in society, in particular the commodification of their identities and their intrinsic link to ‘beauty’.
