Recovery

(2023)

Our sense of self undoubtedly becomes distorted following a traumatic incident. Normality becomes uncertainty, living becomes surviving, and emotions run wild in a desperate attempt to return to what once was. ‘Recovery’ consists of two paintings created at a time of heightened vulnerability, where comfort and familiarity were essential components to the healing of mind and body.

Suspension is exploratory of the ability to view both ‘front’ and ‘back’ of the work, giving the observer the capacity to view the work as unreservedly as possible. This installation seeks to emulate a space in which surfaces were worked over time, with pentimento (the presence of earlier marks that have been painted over) representing endurance, but nevertheless perseverance.
